About Sale

Sale is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, in Greater Manchester. Historically part of Cheshire, the town lies on flat ground on the south bank of the River Mersey, just 5.2 miles southwest of the city of Manchester. It had a population of 55,000, according to the 2001 census.

Sale's geology consists of sand and gravel deposited about 10,000 years ago, during the last ice age.The bedrock is Bunter sandstone in the west and Triassic waterstone in the east. United Utilities obtains the town's drinking water from the Lake District.
