Trees were grouped either by the land-use or by tree characteristics such as age and species distribution. At the 'Ashwood Dale' site, adjacent land-use ranged from the busy A6 Bakewell Road with 15,000 vehicle passing on an average day, a minor road, a quarry railway, low-use footpaths and a camp site car park. This woodland was broken down into five groups or compartments and a total of five trees were found to justify an individual record and risk assessment.

Our assessment of risk for each group was in relation to the worst case scenario for each group. Where the risk from the worst case came below the client's threshold for risk acceptance then no further risk assessments were required. If the worst case was unacceptable, we assessed the next worst case and so on.
